People around the world not only speak different languages, they use different video standards as well. DVD's and videotapes look alike, but in fact they carry different signals. The tape recorded in Europe won't play in off-the-shelf VCR in Canada. As well as DVD purchased in Canada may not play in India or Russia.

There are three common video standards found around the globe. The US standard is NTSC, (National Television Systems Committee or Never Twice the Same Color). NTSC is also nationally accepted in Canada. The other formats are PAL and SECAM.
